Client Brief

Contamac is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of contact (CL) and intraocular (IOL) lens materials,

and a leading innovator in the development of specialist polymers and biocompatible materials for medical applications.

They don’t make contact lenses – their clients do, from their materials. Their 35,000sq ft (3,250m2) headquarters in Saffron Walden, England – just outside the university city of Cambridge – features an ISO7 (Class 10,000) clean room and state-of-the-art manufacturing, research and laboratory facilities.

In the three decades since it was founded Contamac has witnessed the introduction of ever-more stringent safeguarding controls, and so has developed systems and protocols to ensure compliance with worldwide regulatory requirements.

Increasingly, clients turn to them for help in obtaining necessary product approvals, whether it be CE Marking or 510K submissions. Contamac is synonymous with the highest quality standards. They are ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 accredited, and two-time recipients of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise. At Contamac they pride themselves in being an international company in every sense. Their sales and marketing team is fluent in nearly a dozen languages and speaks regularly with clients in almost every world time zone. Having offices in the UK, US and China, and distributors around the world, allows them to be truly global, locally.

"We do really appreciate the job you have gone for the company. Your approach and customer care was excellent throughout"

THE PROJECT

Lopez Landa Interiors supported Contamac with the complete refurbishment

of their new 8,500 Sqft R&D and manufacture facilities in Saffron Walden.

After an inital visit to the premises to check the current condition of the industrial unit, it was highlighted that further assessments were required prior to the commencement of the works – Mainly an asbestos survey (due to the age of the unit) and an structural assessment as the unit was divided by a full height structural wall that needed to be removed. The asbestos survey confirmed our team’s concerns that further asbestos removal would be required. Our team, liaised with the contractor responsible for the asbestos removal on behalf of the Landlord and got them to undertake the remaining removal required.

Additionally, when the structural checks were carried out,

our structural engineer also highlighted that the existing first floor timber structure would not be able to cope with the loads required for Contamac’s activities and these also needed to be reinforced.

These unforseen circumstances set our programme of works back by just 4 weeks, when we installed new structural steels, reinforced foundations and reinforced the existing joists to meet the independent structural engineer requirements.

Additionally to these enabling works, we managed the upgrade of the power intake into the building to suit the
working loads required by Contamac, as well as the relocation of the gas meter in the property to suit the lay out.

Once our contracts team took care of the initial phases of the project, we carried out the complete fit out of the two floors, creating the different office areas, the new canteen and kitchen area, WC blocks, creation of the clean room areas and various external works for the clean rooms equipment required.

THE PROJECT

This first project for Contamac proved to be an exciting challenge

where our contracts and technical teams excelled in their performance in order to mitigate and solve any hidden issues along the way. We thank Contamac for the opportunity and look forward to supporting them throughout their exciting growing plan.
